The residency
A three-month residency combining studio work, participation in New York’s art world and professional development.
The New York art world
The program offers introductions and cultural visits. Participation in exhibitions and openings, and contact with artists, curators and gallerists, also depend on the artist’s own initiative.
Knowledge and professional relationships
Professional development through the New York Foundation for the Arts supports the presentation of work and career planning. The aim is for knowledge and relationships to remain useful after the residency.
The program
- Visiting Critics: individual studio meetings with curators and arts professionals.
- Cultural visits: field trips and gallery outings in and around New York.
- Artists at Work: public talks and presentations, alongside exchanges and activities with fellow residents.
- Artist exchange: conversations, talks and activities with an international group of artists and curators.
- Spring Open Studios: an opportunity to present recent projects, work in progress, installations and research to arts professionals and the public. The 2027 event schedule is to be confirmed.
- Professional development: New York Foundation for the Arts programming in areas such as strategic planning, marketing, fundraising, presenting and writing about your work, financial literacy, art law and portfolio development.
These are opportunities for artistic and professional development. Gallery representation, artwork sales and particular career outcomes are not promised.
International Studio & Curatorial Program is an international visual arts residency program in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Its studios, galleries and project space bring artists and curators together in a working community.

Founded in 1994, the International Studio & Curatorial Program has 35 individual studios, two galleries and a project space in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It has welcomed more than 2,000 artists and curators from more than 105 countries, with approximately 35 resident artists and curators forming an international community at any one time.
Open Studios has a history of approximately three decades. Past field trips have included the Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Queens Museum and Dia Beacon. These examples describe the program’s history; the spring 2027 itinerary is still to be confirmed.
A history of artists from Greece
The program has a longstanding connection with Greece. Past sponsors of Greek artists include ARTWORKS, J.F. Costopoulos Foundation, Fulbright Foundation in Greece, Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki and Betoil Corporation. Greek and Greece-based artists who have participated include Sofia Stevi, Iria Vrettou, Paky Vlassopoulou, Stefania Strouza, Yannis Ziogas, Maria Lalou, Antonis Pittas and Maro Michalakakos.
